Guitarist, singer, and songwriter McKinley James has released his new single “Back On The Run,” marking his debut with Easy Eye Sound and introducing the next chapter of a career built on traditional American roots music, soul, blues, and rock ‘n’ roll.
Accompanied by a new music video and an upcoming 7-inch vinyl release, the single showcases James’ signature blend of vintage rhythm and blues, Motown-inspired soul, and guitar-driven rock. Produced through Easy Eye Sound, the recording pairs James’ expressive guitar work with a tight rhythm section anchored by his father, veteran drummer Jason Smay.
James’ connection to Easy Eye Sound extends beyond the recording studio. Before stepping into the spotlight, he worked at the label’s Nashville headquarters, sweeping floors and learning under the mentorship of Dan Auerbach. That experience helped shape the straightforward, hard-earned approach that defines his songwriting and musicianship today.

Drawing inspiration from influential artists including Otis Rush and Johnny “Guitar” Watson, James continues to embrace classic sounds without relying on nostalgia, delivering performances rooted in authenticity and musicianship.
Already recognized for sharing stages with ZZ Top, McKinley James will continue building momentum throughout the year with touring appearances alongside The James Hunter Six and The Mavericks, bringing Back On The Run to audiences across North America.
