WESTERN ADDICTION RETURN WITH “PSYCHEDELIC MUNITIONS” ON FAT/HOPELESS RECORDS

Western Addiction have occupied a singular place within the American punk underground — a band forged not merely in the scene, but directly inside one of punk rock’s most revered institutions. Emerging from the halls of San Francisco’s legendary Fat Wreck Chords, the group built a reputation for marrying breakneck hardcore with sharp lyrical observation, channeling frustration, empathy, and social commentary into compact bursts of sonic violence.

Now, after years of relative silence, the Bay Area veterans have returned with their first new music since 2020. The new single, “Let’s Keep the Circle Small,” arrived as both a statement of intent and a warning shot announcing the forthcoming release of ‘Psychedelic Munitions‘, the band’s long-awaited fourth full-length record, available May 22nd on Fat Wreck Chords/Hopeless Records.

The track wastes little time reminding listeners why Western Addiction have remained one of punk’s most respected cult acts. Furious yet melodic, the song lashes forward with jagged riffs, desperate urgency, and the kind of precision that only comes from years spent refining a sound rather than chasing trends. There is anger here, certainly — but also purpose. Western Addiction have never been a band interested in empty rebellion. Their songs have long explored the human cost of inequality, capitalism, alienation, and social decay, often through vivid storytelling and unconventional imagery. According to the band, Psychedelic Munitions continues that tradition while pushing their sound into new territory.

“We’re really proud of Psychedelic Munitions,” the group shared in a statement accompanying the release. “Three years of grinding work went into making our fourth album. A lot of thought goes into every aspect of the songs.”

The band explained that the lengthy process stemmed from an uncompromising commitment to quality — only releasing material worthy of both their own standards and the time of listeners. Themes throughout the record reportedly include wealth inequality, depression, food waste, the failures of capitalism, and the overlooked figures of history, all filtered through characters and narrative perspectives rather than straightforward slogans.

Musically, the new material promises evolution without abandoning the band’s roots. Western Addiction note that Psychedelic Munitions contains “more melody, shorter songs, and more immediacy,” while even experimenting with unexpected textures — including what they describe as “a country song through the W/A riff chipper.”

The album was recorded and mixed by Scott Evans of Kowloon Walled City and Antisleep Audio, with mastering handled by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege. Continuing a tradition of special guests appearing on each record, Psychedelic Munitions also features spoken-word contributions from hardcore veteran Clifford Dinsmore of Bl’ast!, Seized Up, and Dusted Angel. Cover artwork was created by artist Jaxon Northon.

The return of Western Addiction also arrives during a significant transitional era for Fat Wreck Chords itself. Founded in 1990 by NOFX frontman Fat Mike and Erin Burkett, the label became synonymous with melodic punk through landmark releases by Lagwagon, No Use For A Name, Propagandhi, Good Riddance, and countless others. More than simply a record company, FAT became a cultural institution — championing artist-friendly contracts, political activism, and fiercely independent ethics.

With Fat Wreck now partnered alongside Hopeless Records, Western Addiction’s return feels symbolic: a bridge between punk’s fiercely independent past and its uncertain modern future. Yet if “Let’s Keep the Circle Small” proves anything, it is that the band remain uninterested in nostalgia. Instead, they sound like a group once again staring directly into the collapse around them — and responding the only way they know how: louder, faster, sharper, and absolutely uncompromising.
