HUMMUSVACUUM TURN MIDWEST MELTDOWNS INTO ‘THE ART OF A FAKE LAUGH’

From the restless corners of Columbus, Ohio comes HummusVacuum, a band determined to prove that humor and heartbreak can occupy the very same stage. Equal parts self-deprecating punk chaos and emotionally unguarded confession, the group’s upcoming record, The Art of A Fake Laugh, arrives May 22 through Smartpunk Records, delivering eleven tracks of anxious catharsis wrapped in breakneck riffs, singalong hooks, and tongue-in-cheek absurdity.

At a time when modern emo often leans heavily toward introspection and polished melancholy, HummusVacuum crash through the door with something far messier — and far more human. Their songs bounce between emotional collapse and comedic relief with the speed of a panic attack, capturing the strange emotional whiplash of modern adulthood. Titles such as “Whoops! (I Think I Ruined My Life),” “Lexapro Skater,” and “The Claw Is Rigged Anyway” suggest a band fully aware of the absurdity surrounding them, yet unwilling to hide behind irony alone.

The Columbus outfit describe themselves as a bridge between punk rock and humorous sensibilities, but beneath the jokes lies a deeply earnest core. Their sound fuses the emotional urgency of Midwest emo with the speed and immediacy of skate punk, resulting in songs that feel equally suited for basement shows, long highway drives, and existential crises at 2 a.m.

Adding to the anticipation surrounding the record is the release of the single “Tattletale,” unveiled May 13 alongside an accompanying moving picture presentation. The track further showcases the band’s ability to balance emotional vulnerability with chaotic wit, pairing restless hooks and driving guitars with lyrics that unravel insecurity, social anxiety, and self-awareness through HummusVacuum’s distinctly frantic lens. The accompanying video mirrors the song’s manic energy, blending DIY punk aesthetics with surreal visual humor and emotionally charged performance footage that captures the band’s unpredictable spirit.

Tattletale” feels emblematic of what makes HummusVacuum compelling: beneath the sarcasm and eccentricity is a very real tension between wanting to laugh everything off and wanting desperately to be understood. The single has quickly become one of the clearest windows yet into the emotional core of The Art of A Fake Laugh, reinforcing the band’s growing reputation within the contemporary emo-punk underground.

The album itself appears poised to expand upon that balance. Across its eleven-song runtime, the record swings between explosive anthems and emotionally frayed confessionals, embracing both vulnerability and ridiculousness without apology. In many ways, the album reflects a generation attempting to laugh through instability — financially, emotionally, socially — while still searching for genuine connection underneath the noise.

Released through Smartpunk Records, a label that has increasingly become a haven for contemporary punk and emo revival acts, the album positions HummusVacuum among a growing wave of artists revitalizing DIY punk with sincerity rather than nostalgia. Yet the band’s greatest strength may be their refusal to take themselves too seriously while still treating their songs with complete emotional honesty.

If The Art of A Fake Laugh proves anything, it is that HummusVacuum understand a truth punk rock has always carried at its center: sometimes survival itself is both tragedy and punchline. And sometimes the loudest laugh in the room is the one keeping everything from falling apart.
