FIDDLEHEAD RETURN WITH ‘BABY I’LL CHANGE’ EP

Massachusetts post-hardcore outfit Fiddlehead have announced the release of their new three-song EP, Baby I’ll Change, which is available June 26 via Run For Cover Records. The release marks the band’s first new material since their acclaimed 2023 full-length, Death Is Nothing To Us.

For vocalist Patrick Flynn and his bandmates, the new EP emerged during a period of personal loss and reflection that reshaped the group’s outlook on continuing as a band. Following the completion of what Flynn viewed as a thematic trilogy of records centered around grief, family, and personal growth, Fiddlehead had questioned whether another release was necessary.

That perspective shifted in late 2024 following the death of Flynn’s mother. Shortly afterward, guitarist Alex Henery and bassist Nick Hinsch traveled across the country to support their longtime friend, and what began as an act of friendship unexpectedly became the foundation for new music.

The resulting EP was recorded with producer Alex Farrar at Drop of Sun Studios in Asheville, North Carolina. Known for his work with artists including Wednesday, Archers of Loaf, and M.J. Lenderman, Farrar helped guide the band through a recording process that expanded Fiddlehead’s established sound while preserving the emotional intensity that has defined the group since its formation.

Lead single and title track “Baby I’ll Change” showcases that evolution. Beginning with a sparse guitar arrangement and one of Flynn’s most restrained vocal performances to date, the song gradually builds toward a cathartic and expansive conclusion. The track’s title references a phrase often used by the late Boston hardcore figure Jimmy Flynn, whose influence and memory also appear during the song’s closing moments.

The EP opens with “The Dogs,” a song celebrating the bond between the band’s members and their shared history, before moving through the melodic urgency of “Porchlight” and arriving at the emotional centerpiece of the title track.

Since their formation, Fiddlehead have become one of the most respected bands operating at the intersection of hardcore, punk, and alternative rock. While the group’s members have consistently approached each release as though it might be their last, that philosophy has paradoxically allowed the band to evolve without commercial pressure or expectation.

As Fiddlehead left the studio, they were buzzing at what they just created. Flynn says he was so charged up by what just occurred that he couldn’t sleep that night. “It felt like a new band in a very organic way,” says Flynn, quick to note that Fiddlehead didn’t go into the studio with some self-inflated idea of reinventing the band. They just did what they always have: listen to what’s inside of them and find an honest way of expressing it. “There’s a lot of times in the band group chat where we’re like, ‘What if we did a song like this?,’” says Henery. “And that’s the thing—what if?”

Baby I’ll Change appears to mark a new chapter for the band. Rather than serving as a conclusion, the EP documents a renewed commitment to friendship, creativity, and the possibility of continuing forward together. As Flynn himself reflected during the recording process, Fiddlehead no longer feels like a project approaching its end, but one intended to continue, as they do so on the road this Summer, hitting Seattles Washington Hall mid July. – Get tickets here.
